Seminar on Urban Air Pollution modelling on November 22, 2021 at 14:30 CET

Poznan Supercomputing and Networking Center in cooperation with Széchenyi István University organizes a seminar on Urban Air Pollution (UAP) modelling systems. It will be conducted within the series of PSNC seminars and will take place on November 22nd at 2:30 CET. The seminar will be composed of two presentations with the main focus on UAP aspects. We start with an introduction to HiDALGO which also encompasses aspects related to PSNC activity in the project. HiDALGO - HPC and Big Data Technologies for Global Systems – is a European project funded by the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme of the European Union.

The project is carried out by 13 institutions from seven countries. HiDALGO develops novel methods, algorithms and software for HPC and HPDA to accurately model and simulate the complex processes, which arise in connection with major Global Challenges (GC). GC defines ventures requiring interdisciplinary collaboration, demanding sophisticated knowledge and mechanisms to collect and process data by scalable methods on analytical, but also on simulation level.

The Global Challenges applications are highly demanding in terms of the amount of processed data. This implicates that the application design must demonstrate sufficient resiliency to operate efficiently on incoming data on a given timeframe, taking into account manifold data sources and their particular characteristics. The project achievements in an optimization area will be presented on the basis of the results of the analysis of pilot applications originating from "Social Networks" use case and conducted on both CPU and GPU units. The following and main part of the seminar will focus on technologies applied to use-cases such as Urban Air Pollution (UAP). The UAP vision is to create cleaner air in cities by using high performance computing (HPC) and mathematical technologies. To this end it provides to policy makers and society an easy-to-use computational tool that accurately and quickly forecasts air pollution in cities with very high resolution.

Furthermore, a traffic control system will be developed as well to minimize air pollution while considering traffic flow constraints. The UAP application is a software framework for modelling the vehicular traffic emitted air pollution and its dispersion at very high resolution by using geometry inputs (Open Street Map), coupled weather data (ECMWF) and traffic simulation (SUMO), computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools running on HPC infrastructures (OpenFOAM), and evaluation with HPDA methods.
