SZE

Széchenyi István University

The main campus of the Széchenyi István University (SZE) is situated in Győr, Hungary on the halfway, cca. 100 kilometers along the highway between the capitols and industrial centres of Budapest and Vienna providing excellent location for national and international industry. Actually, among other parties of several industry sectors the largest engine factory of the world, the Audi Hungaria Ltd. and hundreds of automotive suppliers have been operating here. The University in its 9 faculties provides education, as well as pursuing research and innovation work in the fields of engineering, IT, architecture, pedagogy, economics, international relations, law, social work, medicine and health, musical arts and agriculture for more than 14.000 students.

The Simulation and Optimization Research Group has been established in 2009 from the members of the Department of Mathematics and Computational Sciences to pursue research and innovation activities with developing and applying mathematical key technologies like mathematical modelling, simulation and optimization (MSO) in combination with high performance computing (HPC) and recently with cloud computing and machine learning (ML). The research group has been coordinated and participated in many projects such as the H2020 EINFRA project MSO4SC, the Intensification of the activities of HU-MATHS-INS.

Our Role

Based on the HiDALGO infrastructure, SZE will develop an application for real time, highly accurate urban air pollution (UAP) simulation and evaluation to compute air quality indicators (AQIs) at street level using real time data of a sensor network and the weather/air quality simulation forecast data provided by ECMWF.

After all the UAP pilot will define and implement a service aimed to be provided via the Copernicus Atmospheric Modelling Services (CAMS) to provide AQIs, maps of pollutant concentrations and other results to policy makers and citizens.
In addition, SZE will lead the task of developing and operating a sensor network of urban traffic with other HiDALGO partners, the Hungarian Road Network and the Adaptive Recognition Hungary Ltd. implemented to be implemented in Győr city. This platform will be used for traffic optimization purposes as well, with traffic measures and AQI objectives.

The results will be achieved by developing and coupling high performance simulations and data analysis with assimilating real time data earned from a suitable developed traffic sensor network and CAMS services. Simulations will use and further develop the state-of-the-art algorithms and tools of the mathematical technologies (e.g. model order reduction for flow computations). For the initial version of the simulation and AQI computations the project will use the 3DAirQualityPrediction pilot of the MSO4SC project.

SZE will disseminate HiDALGO results and promote its tools to all European mathematicians using its channels to EU-MATHS-IN, the pan-European network of industrial mathematicians and the Applied Mathematics Committee of the European Mathematical Society and SZE’s industrial partners involved in the one-stop-shop of mathematics for industry.

The SZE team is composed of mathematicians, computer scientists and experts of the involved multidisciplinary fields who have been proved by several successful relevant national and international projects.
